This table shows the number of businesses (local units) in regions and districts in England split by industrial type. The data refers to March 2009 to 2013. A local unit is an individual site (for example a factory or shop) in an enterprise. The data is published by ONS and is compiled from the Inter- Departmental Business Register (IDBR), which contains information on VAT traders and PAYE employers in a statistical register comprising of over 2 million enterprises. The IDBR misses some very small businesses without VAT or PAYE schemes (self employed and those with low turnover and without employees). Business Demography data published by ONS report a higher number of Active businesses due to differences in methodology. Business Demography takes into account businesses that were active at any time during the reference year, whereas this data is based on a snapshot of the IDBR at a point in time in March.
