What are Equality Impact Assessments?

Demonstrating equality is at the heart of Milton Keynes Council’s strategy and practice. Equality impact assessments (EqIA) are a tool to help colleges and universities ensure that their policies, practices and decisions are fair, meet the needs of their staff and students and that they are not inadvertently discriminating against any protected group.

Legal requirements

EIA is not a legal requirement in England, but it is an established and credible tool for demonstrating due regard to the public sector equality duty (PSED), which is required by law. Public Sector Equality Duty

Carrying out an EqIA

EIA does not have to follow a specified process, but you may want to use this EqIA process and documentation. Where these are in place, it is important that this is updated to reflect the broader reach of the Equality Act.
